# Choosing or changing your fax number

When you sign up you can choose the number that fits you.

**Picking a number**

- Search by area code to get a local number.
- Search for a vanity number, for example a number that spells FAX or a memorable digit pattern.
- We offer numbers in the United States and Canada.

**Changing your number later**

- You can change your number up to two times at no extra charge from [Phone Numbers](https://app.avofax.com/settings/workspace/numbers).
- If you want to keep a number you already own, do not change it. Port it in instead. See the porting guide.

If a search shows no available numbers for an area code, try again shortly or pick a nearby area code. Inventory refreshes regularly.
