How to test that your fax line is working
If you are ever unsure whether your fax line is working, you do not need to contact us to find out. You can confirm it yourself in about five minutes using a free test service, and it checks both directions at once.
The short version
Send a one page fax from AvoFax to 1-888-473-2963. Within about five minutes an automated confirmation fax comes back to you and appears in your AvoFax Inbox. If it arrives, your line is healthy.
That number is the HP Fax Test Service. It is free, toll free in the United States, and it exists purely to answer fax test calls.
Why this test is worth doing
Most fax worries sound like one of these:
- "I have not received anything today, is something broken?"
- "Did my fax actually go through?"
- "Is my number still active?"
A single test answers all three. Because the test service replies to the number in your fax header, and AvoFax fills that in with your own fax number automatically, the confirmation comes back to you. So one action proves that your sending works and that your number can receive.
How to run the test
- Open Send Fax.
- Under Send From, pick the number you want to test. If you have more than one number, test each separately, because each one is a separate line.
- Under Recipients, enter +1 888 473 2963.
- Under Files, attach any one page document. A cover page on its own is fine.
- Fill in Your Name so the cover page is not blank, then send.
Keep it to a single page. The test service only needs one, and it keeps the cost to you at one page.
What should happen
You should see two things:
- Your outgoing fax shows as delivered in your activity history, usually within a minute or two.
- A confirmation fax arrives in your Inbox, normally within five minutes.
If both happen, your line is working correctly in both directions and there is nothing to worry about.
If the confirmation does not arrive
Give it ten minutes before drawing any conclusions. Fax is not instant and the test service can be busy.
After ten minutes, what you saw tells us where to look:
- Your outgoing fax failed and no confirmation arrived. The issue is on the sending side. Check that the file is a supported type and try once more.
- Your outgoing fax delivered but no confirmation arrived. Sending works and the question is about receiving. Send us a message and we will check your inbound routing.
Either way, tell us which of those two you saw. It saves a round of questions and lets us go straight to the right place.
Worth knowing
A quiet day is not the same as a broken line. Fax volume varies, and it is normal to receive nothing at all on some days, particularly around weekends and holidays. If you are unsure, run the test rather than wait and wonder.
Some individual faxes also fail for reasons neither side controls. A call can connect and then break down before the pages transfer, usually because of line quality somewhere along the route. This is a normal part of how fax works, and the sender's machine will typically retry. It does not mean your number is faulty.
The test uses one page from your monthly allowance to send, and the confirmation uses one to receive.
Still stuck
Message us from your account and include the fax number you tested, roughly when you ran the test, and what you saw. If you are chasing a specific fax that never arrived, send us the sender's fax number and the approximate time and we can ask our carrier to trace the call.
